Jabiru Electric Motor
Quieter, smoother operation and easier maintenance.A Different Form of Power
The benefits of electric aircraft motors are easy to understand, including environmental benefits, simplicity of maintenance, quieter and smoother operation, while maintaining equivalent or improved performance. All of these aspects make electric power highly attractive in aircraft in the same way that they have for vehicles over the last decade.
However there are still significant disadvantages compared to ICE aircraft, the two primary ones being the relative weight of alternate energy sources (eg batteries) and the speed and convenience of “refuelling”.
These technical challenges will eventually be solved and when they are, Jabiru will be ready to continue supplying your aviation propulsion needs. With the support of the Australian Government’s Emerging Aviation Technology Partnerships program, Jabiru has its first electric motor on the test rig and will be in the air in 2025.
The first Jabiru Electric Motor, the JEM, is a direct alternative to our 2200 ICE, with design power of 83 kW peak and 40 kW continuous at 3,000 rpm and coming in at around 20kg.
